"IPM WARNING/CAUTION: The terminology IPM or Integrated Pest Management as used by the indoor pest control companies is meaningless. They become IPM experts by sitting in a good old boys meeting for 1 - 3 hours and are state qualified IPM practitioners, and then they continue to spray their poisons as usual! Even the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is now distributing materials , e.g., 'Integrated Pest Management in Schools' and 'Pest Control in the School Environment: Adopting Integrated Pest Management' from a cooperative IPM effort with pesticide manufacturers, formulators and professional applicators, e.g., the pest control industry trade group RISE (Responsible Industry for a Sound Environment), the National Pest Control Association (NPCA) and the Professional Lawn Care Association (PLCAA) who paid for all of the printing and mailing. RISE executive director Allen James said, 'IPM, including the use of specialty pesticides, assures that our children and school personnel can enjoy a safe and healthy academic environment.' The EPA material states, "There are, of course, many pest problems that require the use of pesticides.' ""As you read and use this manual of Intelligent Pest Management you will find that volatile, synthetic pesticide poisons are really not needed, are harmful and actually increase pest problems, contamination and costs. You should never need to hire any professional poison applicators or use any dangerous synthetic pesticide poisons again!
"Consultation Note: For a $30 annual personal fee, Get Set, Inc. provides free mail or phone consultations on all the materials covered in this manual/CD and any newly developed alternatives, techniques products and current health concerns.

Remember folks, it's not just the toxins you get to learn about from the labels that you should
concern yourself with, but the inerts, which have not been required to be listed on the label.
Inerts are often more toxic than the chemicals they list on the labels.
I have not seen a lable for Roundup or Garlon, but according to PANUPS, a U.S. court ruled that
Inerts were to be disclosed. IF these poisons are being used in your area, check that label! See
http://www.panna.org/resources/pestis/PESTIS.1996.133.html
Also, whenever someone is pushing the use of pesticides, or trying to marginalize them as "only
herbicides," you should take it upon yourself to look for the other side of the information.
There's more info available than I can get up on EHN's site. Search for harmful effects of the
pesticide you are told to use, or which will be used in your area. Then stand up for safer means of
"pest" control. Safer alternatives do exist! It's up to us to make sure they are used. And when,
costs are thrown in your face, ask if they've calculated the cost of reproductive harm to the animals,
whether they crawl on their bellies, use two legs, four or more, or fly. -- barb

http://www.geneethics.org/html/legal.html- But Roundup is much more damaging and persistent than claimed.
In 1993, the School of Public Health at the University of California found glyphosate
was the third most common cause of reported illness among Californian farm
workers, and for landscapers, the highest. The Journal of Pesticide Reform says the
chemical also damages the ability of soil bacteria to transform nitrogen into a usable
form for plants and harms fungi that help plants absorb water and nutrients.
Monsanto's own literature says the average half-life of Roundup residues in
soil and water are 60 and 14 days (in 10 half-lives chemicals decay to benign levels).
Residues were found in lettuce, carrots, and barley planted a year after the soil
was last sprayed.
In the State of New York, Monsanto has settled a court case for $50,000 costs and
agreed to retract advertising claims on the safety and biodegradability of Roundup.
They will no longer say Roundup is safer than table salt, "practically non-toxic" to
mammals, birds and fish, "biodegradable" and "environmentally friendly". Nor can
they imply that the risks of chemical cocktails like Roundup are the same as the active
ingredient, glyphosate,as this ignores the toxicity of so-called "inert" ingredients.

Meanwhile, with financial support from the USDA, growers in Southern California are using a wide variety of insecticides to attempt to knock down sharpshooter populations to manageable levels in areas where it is already established. "These chemically based approaches are flawed because:
- Pesticides endanger human health and the environment.
- Insecticides are unlikely to bring the sharpshooter below its economic threshold because it damages crops by spreading disease rather than consuming the plant.
- Broad-spectrum insecticides kill beneficial insects, including parasites and predators of sharpshooters and other pests. This creates an ecological vacuum that will create more pest problems in the future. ..."

Spring Cleaning
Do your spring cleaning safely. Did you know cleaning your home can be harmful to
your health? Many common household cleaners contain toxic
solvents, fragrances,
disinfectants, and other ingredients that can pollute the air and cause respiratory, skin,
and other reactions. Learn about vegetable-based cleaning products you can buy,
recipes for cleaners you can make at home, and more tips on green cleaning. Before you
clean out your garage and cart everything off to the dumpster, go to Earth911.org to
find out where to recycle, donate, and safely dispose of many of your possessions.
Need to clean up your yard? Choose exercise over emissions: leave the leaf blower behind
and pick up a rake; forget the gas-powered lawn mower and purchase a manual push or
electric mower.

Adverse Effects Reporting: FIFRA 6(a)(2)
- But Roundup is much more damaging and persistent than claimed.

"Golfers can thank monosodium methanearsonate (MSMA) for flawless, weed-free
fairways, but experts are questioning whether the arsenic-containing pesticide is safe for
the environment and human health. New research reveals that, despite industry claims,
MSMA applied to golf courses with certain types of soil degrades to toxic inorganic
arsenic, which leaches into groundwater. A separate study has documented that MSMA
can move through wildlife food chains. The news comes as Canada and the United
States are re-evaluating registrations for MSMA.
"According to the U.S. EPA, MSMA "can reasonably be anticipated to cause cancer in
humans" and is converted in the environment to inorganic arsenic, a known human
carcinogen. About 4 million pounds of MSMA is applied every year to golf courses and
cotton fields in the United States to control weeds. The pesticide has been banned in
India and Indonesia. ..."

Living Green
- Home Tour - "Give your home an environmental upgrade room by room."
Good tips, but standard. No mention of fragrance chemical air/water pollution. The home tour
includes information regarding pesticides, treated lawns, etc. Now, if they could also reference
using safer, fragrance-free cleaning products, in the laundry, kitchen and bath, advise against
air "fresheners" throughout the home and especially in the nursery, reference the use of safer
cosmetics in the bedroom and the bathroom, I'd believe they were really giving examples of
GREEN living. Remember, our scented products pollute the air and water, thereby affecting our
health and others as well as the wildlife with whom we share our planet. -- barb

While I've yet to see advice about using non-scented products, this section links out to
a tip for making your own, safer household cleaners. But purchasing products without scent
takes some doing, for the words "fragrance-free" and "unscented" on the label do not mean
that the product is free of synthetic scent. Alas, scents can be used to mask other objectionable
odors. That practice is OK by the FDA, but it sure is hell on the consumer who must use
UNscented, truly fragrance-FREE products. -- barb

"A. Conclusions
- "There is no persuasive evidence that any of the proposed etiologies caused chronic
illness on a significant scale in the absence of acute injury at initial exposure. In fact,
the overall health experience of US troops in Operation Desert Storm (ODS) was
favorable beyond previous military precedent, with regard to non-combat as well as
combat-related disease. This remarkably low background has probably put into relief the
residual health problems that have instigated this inquiry.
- " There is no scientific or medical evidence that either chemical or biological warfare
was deployed at any level against us, nor that there were any exposures of US service
members to chemical or biological warfare agents in Kuwait or Saudi Arabia. We are
aware of one soldier who was blistered, plausibly from mustard gas, after entering a
bunker in Iraq during the postwar period.
- " The epidemiological evidence is insufficient at this time to support the concept of
any coherent "syndrome." We do recognize that veterans numbering in the hundreds
have complained of a range of symptoms not yet explained by any clear-cut diagnosis
-- a number of cases in many respects resemble the a Chronic Fatigue Syndrome"; it
would be advantageous to coordinate further research on veterans' illness in this
category with ongoing studies of "CFS " in the civilian population. This is not to deny the
possibility of service-connectedness, as severe stress, infection and trauma may well
be precipitating causes of "CFS."
- " Much further work is needed, even to verify whether the incidence of
symptomatic events, beyond the reports of complaints that can be elicited by wide
publicity, is associated with any specific aspects of ODS experience, or indeed is provably
different among ODS veterans compared to other armed forces or the civilian
population. This remark is not to be read as denying service-connectedness, but simply a
reflection of the tenuous state of the available epidemiological data and the absence
of controlled surveys and studies."
