By James E. Lessenger, MD, From a private practice.
"... A female medical assistant with no history of asthma or reactions to fragrances was
assaulted by a patient, who pumped three sprays of a perfume into her face. The
employee experienced an acute anaphylactic reaction with shortness of breath, a
suffocating sensation, wheezes, and generalized urticaria, and required aggressive
medical treatment, a long period of oral bronchodilator therapy, and, finally, weaning
from the medications. ... "

Barb Wilkie's personal opinion -- the short of it:
OSHA is not there for workers who acquired chemical injury, especially those working in an
office setting, from the use -- by other people -- of fragrance products, be it for personal care,
cleaning and/or maintenance. Scented products include pesticides, which in turn includes
disinfectants. Just look at their references, which include industry fronts and apologists. I suggest
taking the information available here with a salt block, not just that proverbial grain. They just don't get IT. It? What? It's the CHEMICALS!
Fragrances are petrochemical products! Think hydrocarbons. Think volatile organic compounds.
Think toxins that become one with the air we all must breathe, whether or not we already have
asthma, are carrying a child, or we have cancer or have had cancer and chemo. Regardless.
Fragrance chemicals are there for everyone to breathe. What's worse, fragrances have
become ubiquitous, which means that even if your astute doctor tells you to AVOID fragrances,
you cannot as long as they are in use in your workplace, be that a school, a healthcare facility
or doctor's office, a legal office, a government agency, a ...

Ocean/Sea
Remember folks, our modern pharmaceuticals, pesticides, and fragrances in scented products
are most likely petrochemically derived. Fertilizers, too, create serious problems as they encourage growth of noxious weeds. And guess what that means? YOUR county ag department
will choose to use pesticides to contain noxious weeds, feeding the pollution cycle all the more. These modern chemical products that consumers use do not wash out in wastewater treatment.
These chemicals travel from your drain or from your lawn, to the streams, to the ocean. And
if you use scented products, while swimming in ponds, lakes, streams, the chemicals leave
your body to pollute. Our fish and wildlife are paying a hefty price for our unwitting use of
synthetic products. YOU can do something about it by making a choice to shop for environmentally
safe products and by not relying on so many drugs, over-the-counter and prescribed. -- barb

"... In no case was there persuasive evidence that any olfactory mechanism involving
fragrance underlies either induction of a sensitized state or the triggering of MCS
symptoms. Fragrances and other odorants could, however, be associated with
symptoms as claimed by MCS symptomatics, because they are recognizable stimuli,
but fragrance has not been demonstrated to be causal in the usual sense. Copyright

When will researchers start realizing that mainstream-manufactured "fragrance" or "perfume"
means hydrocarbons? Modern scents are petrochemically derived! As are so many pharmaceuticals.
Why is it so hard to understand why so many MCS patients do much better when they are not
on prescribed drugs? My help comes from chiropractic, acupuncture and Chinese herbs.
It WAS the heavy use of fragranced products in my former workplace -- all of which were
unnecessary! -- that took me from sporadic, manageable bouts of chemical induced asthma into
chronic asthama, chronic bronchitis, and a host of all the other symptoms of MCS. My health is
slowly improving the longer I'm away from daily contact with those superfluous toxins. -- barb

"There are actually three 'chemosensory' systems in the nose and mouth. The first, olfaction, is the ability to detect and identify odors. The second is gustation or taste. Taste function is limited to detection and identification of sweet, sour, salty, and bitter substances in the mouth. The third sense, the 'common chemical sense', is the ability to detect the irritating properties of substances in the mouth and odors in the nose. Through the common chemical sense, we perceive the burn of chili pepper and the tingle of ammonia. " http://www3.uchc.edu/~taste/

Aerosol Hazards: Untested chemicals make some sick by NBC5DFW
A special treat: Lynn Lawson is interviewed. However, NBC5DFW's report is not quite
accurate. Lynn IS safe in her home, which is not more toxic than outdoors, and she doesn't
"prefer spending her days outdoors" (winter in Illinois is pretty cold). Lynn tells us: "What
I am spraying in our kitchen is a bottle filled with vinegar and water, not an aerosol." Also, she
provided the producer a lot of info on fragrances, which wound up on the cutting room floor because
the producer needed to stick to her topic: aerosols and air fresheners.-- barb)

What to know before buying a Valentine¼s Day perfume
By Francesca Lyman; Feb. 6, 2002; MSNBC CONTRIBUTOR
Look for the fragrance industry's duplicity! An industry rep claims that "Products are
thoroughly tested before being marketed," and yet, the same rep states: "In response to the
perceived problems of fragrances in the air, ... begun the first study to examine fragrance
inhalation." Products made to be smelled (inhaled) that have not been tested for inhalation,
cannot be claimed to be "thoroughly tested." And while the industry is testing, how about
testing for neurotoxins, carcinogens and teratogens? And don't you love that phrase
"PERCEIVED problems"?-- barb

- Poisoned Gods
As museums return stolen religious artifacts, Native Americans are learning that their
most sacred objects may kill them
BY MATT PALMQUIST
"... Federal law compels institutions to return artifacts only if they are
used in religious ceremonies, leaving tribal leaders like Hostler in a conundrum:
Their regalia, after being stolen by whites, contaminated in museums, and
returned at great expense to the tribes, are too poisoned to use and too
precious to pack away. If they bury the items, they risk contaminating the
soil and poisoning their ground water; if they burn them, they risk scarring
their lungs by inhaling the pollutants. In short, Hostler's initial excitement
about repatriation, envisioned as a means to reopen long-lost connections
with his most sacred beliefs, has been displaced by the fear that
communicating with his God could wind up killing him. ... "

Leahy Organic Restoration Act Passes Congress
As Amendment To Appropriations Bill; Restores Strict Organic Standards
"WASHINGTON (Mon. April 14) ‚ The U.S. House and Senate over the weekend
repealed a special-interest rider enacted in February that has threatened to undermine
the seven-month-old national organic standards and labeling program run by the U.S.
Department of Agriculture (USDA). ..."The earlier rider that the amendment repealed was intended to allow producers to
label their meat and dairy products "organic" even though they do not meet USDA¼s
strict criteria, including that the animals be fed organically grown feed, if USDA finds
that organic feed is too expensive or hard to find. The rider was intended to benefit
one Georgia producer, but it was written broadly enough that it essentially created a
loophole for any livestock producer in the country to get around the organic feed
requirement."

Organic Housing isn't healthier
Organic Housing is good for the

"... If you choose to use environmentally sound building
materials anyway, the lack of knowledge can be
somewhat of a risk. For example, the use of fly ash in
concrete proved to be a health hazard. Fly ash is a
waste product from Cole Power Plants that can be
mixed into concrete. This is a way of recycling a
material that would otherwise be difficult to get rid of -
a great solution for the environment. A side effect,
however, was discovered. The fly ash was proved to
be so radioactive that houses where the concrete had
been used to build the foundation were unfit for human

Propylene Glycol and a variety of other unseemly chemicals abound (even in the
so-called "healthy" brands), all mixed up into a potentially toxic soup. Now take a look
at the brands that use the word "Organic" or "Organics" in their name or in their
ingredient list. Companies using the word organic are usually using it in one of two
ways. For marketing purposes, they've added a few organically grown ingredients
to an otherwise toxic mixture, or they are referring to the chemical term "organic," as in
"organic chemistry," which has little to do with organically grown ingredients, but once
again, makes a great marketing ploy. ..."

with ozone in the air to create a potentially harmful smog inside houses. Ozone is a
common component of both urban and rural air. Researchers from the US

Authorities Caution Against the Use of Ozone Generators
"Health Canada has just issued a public advisory against the use of air cleaners designed
to intentionally generate ozone (ozone generators) in their homes. And the Canadian
Standards Association (CSA), after reviewing research and consulting with Health
Canada and others, has decided not to certify these products for household use.
" The government is concerned with what it claims are "adverse health effects that may
result from the deliberate exposure of the public to ozone from air cleaners that
intentionally generate ozone gas". Ozone is an irritant that can cause coughs, chest
discomfort, and irritation of the nose and throat. It is also a by-product of the operation
of many pieces of office equipment ‚ such as computer printers and photocopiers ‚

Ozone Generators -- PLEASE read the warnings!
Here is one ozone generator I've heard about that works well. However, the point is
stressed to never operate it with people or pets in the area and never
run it for more than an hour at a time. And then always, air out the area in
which the product was used. As always, EHN does not endorse any product, service,
or therapy and none is intended or implied. We bring you this information as a
service. In this case, the information comes to us from a friend who lives with MCS
and believes in networking and peer support. It is within that spirit that we lead you
to this product and its website. Of course, below you can read about all the warnings
associated with ozone generators. -- barb

Indoor Air Quality Info Sheet
Health Hazards of Ozone-generating Air Cleaning Devices
Updated: January 1998
"Ozone-generating devices are being marketed to the public as a solution to indoor
quality problems. Ozone generators are available in three forms: in-duct units for central
air systems, portable indoor units, and personal units that are worn on the body. They
are promoted as effective "air purifiers", especially to people sensitive to
indoor air pollutants. Manufacturers often refer to the ozone as activated oxygen,
trivalent oxygen or nature's air purifier to suggest that it is safe. They advertise ozone's
ability to oxidize indoor air pollutants and "leave only carbon dioxide, water, and
breathable oxygen." However, independent studies have shown that ozone generators
do not effectively destroy microbes, remove odor sources, or reduce indoor
pollutants enough to provide any health benefits. More alarming, these devices can
generate excessive levels of ozone and may contribute to eye and nose irritation or
other respiratory health problems for users. ... "
