Babies, Naturally
Please do not use petrochemical-derived fragrance products while you are pregnant,
nor after your baby is born. And try not to breathe in the VOCs (volatile organic compounds) from
the products of others. Remember the adage: An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
That means, look for safer personal care products, as well as safer cleaning and maintenance
products. Switch to safer, non petrochemical-derived detergents, do not use mainstream fabric
softeners. (Fabric softeners pollute for blocks around area of use and then continue to pollute the
air and bodies when worn or used.) Do not use perfume or perfumed personal care products
and ask for fragrance-free accommodation in your workplace, healthcare facility, school, place of
worship. Stay away from artificial flavors . . . did you know that artificial vanilla contains
benzene? No, well most people don't either, but I'll bet you all hear about benzene in connection
with tobacco smoke. Well, folks, you'll find benzene in the damnedest places including flavors
and fragrances, and medicines. It's a known carcinogen for openers. Besides, it is associated
with weight gain . . . and just look at all the information that comes out on fighting obesity,
without once looking at a cause like the toxic chemicals with which our most personal products
are made.
Plus a few other tidbits that I hope are of interest in the struggle for cleaner air . . .
Please remember all links do not always work, but hopefully there is enough info to get you
started on your search.
Personally, I believe fragrances are unreasonably unsafe, but that has yet to be acknowledged by
our US FDA, EPA, CPSC, the DOJ and OSHA. We are sujected to the workings of the
United Soup Alphabet agencies. They, thus far, are united with industry not with WE THE
PEOPLE. Corporations are the people in this era, and until that changes, We the people
will be ignored. At best. So, until such time that products have to be proved safe before
marketing, PLEASE be mindful of your body and the bodies of all others around you -- and if
pregnant, in you. Look for safer products that do not contain petrochemically derived flavors or
fragrances. In effect, vote with your pocket book. Organics are for us and the planet. -- barb

"Pregnant women notice changes in their bodies as well as their skin. Their sense of
smell may become more sensitive. Because of hormonal changes, some women can no
longer take the smell of their usual perfume, or they may simply wish to find a new
fragrance to accompany this turning point in their lives. 'Morning sickness can trigger
a longing for freshness and lightness,' explains gynecologist Anne Baude-Main."
by Bettina Aykroyd
Modern fragrances are derived from petrochemicals. Fragrance chemicals don't just stay on the
mother's skin. These chemicals enter the body through the skin, via inhlataion and can go
directly to one's brain . . . some cross the blood-placental barrier, so she is sharing "her" signature
scent with her developing baby. Ask for a list of ingredients. You'll probably soon learn that
fragrances are protected by trade secret laws and created by a self-regulated industry. But
industry changes for the better will only start with the savy consumer demanding safer products. -- barb

The Quantum Biofeedback System is the culmination of 20 years of research in measuring
the bio-energetics of the human body. Comprised of 55 high speed frequency channels
and the largest medical software program in the world, the Quantum Biofeedback System
provides the most comprehensive and accurate energetic analysis of the human body
available on the market today.
The Quantum Biofeedback System detects abnormal frequencies to determine what
imbalances are most affecting the health. The information is then distributed to over two
hundred therapy programs where the device feeds back appropriate healing frequencies
to neutralize destructive wave patterns. Besides addressing health problems, the
Quantum Biofeedback System can be used for prevention by detecting imbalances in the
energetic field before they materialize physically.
In less than five minutes, over 10,000 parameters of health are tested. The scan provides

"Food producers increasingly rely on synthetic flavors

example: "Blue number two," used in beverages, candy

"Red number three," used in baked goods, candy, and
maraschino cherries, has caused thyroid tumors in rats.
While petroleum-based artificial flavorings are generally
safe, their manufacture often leads to potential
exposures. For example, the production of Vanillin -
artificial vanilla flavor - requires benzene."

Fragrances and Asthma
by Betty Bridges
http://www.invironment.com/inv_spot.htm- Readers Feedback -- letter by Betty Bridges
August 22, 2000
Dear Editor:
I would like to comment on the story "Less Respiratory Impact From Fragrances"
which appeared in the August 2000 issue.
The study at Tulane University did not address several important aspects of asthma.
Asthma has several components.
Bronchoconstriction, which was addressed by the Tulane study, only addresses this
aspect of asthmatic responses to fragrances, and simple spirometry does not always
accurately reflect the constriction of small airways. When the constriction occurs in the
smaller airways rather than the larger ones, spirometry readings may only drop slightly.
Constriction of smaller airways requires more extensive testing to pinpoint. Further,
the exposures were very short, only 20 minutes and there were measurable
constrictions of the airways. What happens if the exposure continues all day, which
are what most asthmatics encounter? Nor did the study take into account that there is
usually exposure to numerous fragranced products. The study did not address at all the
underlying inflammatory process, which is considered by pulmonary experts of
great concern. It is this underlying inflammation that makes the airways more susceptible
to the effects of fragrances and other irritants. And, irritants, such as fragrances,
increase the inflammation. ...

April 2, 2001
Dear Editor:
Recent unwanted exposures to synthetic fragrances reminded me of an article in
INVIRONMENT, August 2000, "Less Respiratory Impact From Fragrances." Tulane's
testing does not reflect reality. Had I been exposed to a synthetic scent in an
inhalation chamber for only 20 minutes and then had the luxury of having the
chamber "flushed"
with filtered air, I know I would not have acquired Multiple
Chemical Sensitivity (MCS). ...

1986 . . . With foreword by Ralph Nader
"What you need to know about cosmetics, allergies, no-frills cosmetics, and 'natural
alternatives'. Also, information about harmful ingredients that you should avoid."
This book is a compilation of information gathered up to press time in 1986, and
includes excerpts from the 1978 General Accounting Office's official study on
inadequate federal regulation of cosmetic safety. This section includes "a list of one
hundred twenty-five (125) cosmetic chemicals that are believed to cause cancer."
A couple of other comments by Ralph Nader in the Foreword:
"Due to some adroit lobbying years ago by the cosmetic industry,
the FDA has to beg for safety, rather than demand it."
"Even with what authority is granted -- to require labeling, ban hazardous ingredients
and seize dangerous or contaminated products -- the FDA is too bereft of will and too
underfunded to perform its duties effectively."

Review by Richard Alexander
"Neuropsychological Toxicology: Identification and Assessment of Numan Neurotoxic
Syndromes. Second Edition. 525 pp. by David E. Hartman. Published by Plenum Press,
New York, (212-620-8000) $59.50 ISBN 0-306-44922-6. Chapters: Introduction, Evaluation
of Neurotoxic Syndromes, Metals, Solvents, Alcohol,Drugs, Pesticides, Other Neurotoxins,
Psychosomatic Disorders, Forensic and Private Practice Issues, References, Index
In the area of toxic tort litigation, this is a significant reference tool and is strongly
recommended as a "must have" for your library. Written by a Chicago neuropsychologist
who is a nationally-known clinical expert on human toxic exposure effects,
Neuropsychological Toxicology is "the" comprehensive reference for attorneys,
neuropsychologists, physicians, toxicologists and advocates who need information
about diagnosing the effects of toxic brain injury.
If Dr. Hartman's groundbreaking book can be summarized in three points it is that (1)
many workplace chemicals and commonly prescribed pharmaceuticals cause brain injury
and nervous system damage (2) millions of adults and children are exposed to these
substances at work or at home and (3) the resulting "neurotoxic" damage is a special
clinical problem that requires a specialized approach in both diagnosis and litigation. ..."

How Environmental Toxins May Effect Reproductive Health in Massachusetts
A Report by Greater Boston Physicians for Social Responsibility (GBPSR)Ýand theÝ
Massachusetts Public Interest Research Group (MASSPIRG) Education Fund; 1996
http://www.igc.org/psr/gar-rpt.htm
Principal Authors:
Ted Schettler, MD, MPH
Gina Solomon, MD, MPH
Paul Burns, JD
Maria Valenti
Executive Summary
Major findings of the report include:
- Of the more than 70,000 synthetic chemicals in commercial use today, only a small fraction have
been adequately examined for toxic effects in humans and other life forms;
- Despite limited scientific information, there is solid evidence of the reproductive toxicity of some
substances in widespread commercial use including solvents, metals, and pesticides; newly-
emerging evidence of the toxicity of others; and important new information about a mechanism of
toxicity known but largely ignored for many years -- hormone (endocrine) disruption;
- Federal and state regulations are frequently not written or implemented in ways protective of
human health and the environment;
- Of industries required to report chemical use, Massachusetts businesses used more than 2.1
billion pounds of toxic chemicals associated with reproductive or developmental disorders from
1990-1994; - Right-to-know legislation like the federal Toxics Release Inventory and the Massachusetts
Toxics Use Reduction Act provide the public with essential information which is rightfully theirs
about toxins to which they may be exposed. However, information gaps show that these laws do
not go far enough. Since these laws were implemented, there has been a reduction in the
environmental release of known and suspected reproductive toxins in Massachusetts;
- In order to protect the public from exposure to known and suspected reproductive toxins, a
precautionary and collaborative approach must be used by government, industry, the medical and
scientific communities, advocacy groups, and private citizens.
- Of the more than 70,000 synthetic chemicals in commercial use today, only a small fraction have

"Professor Gibson has written a book of solid scholarship and
compassionate understanding about an illness that desperately needs
both. This is a highly readable work offering inspiration and a
wealth of knowledgable advice to those afflicted with a
difficult and frequently misunderstood modern health problem. It
is a remarkable thing: A book about MCS by a psychologist who knows
that the illness is not psychological." -- Lynn Lawson M.A.

If Dr. Hartman's groundbreaking book can be summarized in three points it is that (1)
many workplace chemicals and commonly prescribed pharmaceuticals cause brain injury
and nervous system damage (2) millions of adults and children are exposed to these
substances at work or at home and (3) the resulting "neurotoxic" damage is a special
clinical problem that requires a specialized approach in both diagnosis and litigation. ..."

- PREVENTING BREAST-CANCER:
The story of a Major, Proven, Preventable Cause of This Disease.
John W. Gofman, M.D., Ph.D. 1996; Second Edition: 1996
April 5, 1998: COMPLETE BOOK now on-line!
"This book uncovers the major cause of the recent breast-cancer incidence
in the USA. The author shows that past exposure to ionizing radiation ---
primarily medical x-rays --- is responsible for about 75 percent of the
breast-cancer problem in the United States."The good news: Since the radiation dosage given today by medical
procedures can be significantly reduced without interfering with a single
useful procedure, numerous future cases of breast-cancer can be prevented.
"The author recommends specific actions to start breast-cancer
prevention now, not ten years from now.
http://www.ratical.org/radiation/CNR/PBC/index.html- Chapter 1 - Our Conclusion: A Large Share of Breast-Cancers Need Not Occur
"We begin this book with our bottom line, because we think the advice of Sara Jeannette
Duncan is good: "If you have anything of importance to tell me, please, please
begin at the end!" So here is our conclusion:
"Breast-cancer is a largely preventable disease, and we reach that good news because of
our finding that a large share of recent and current breast-cancer in the United
States is certainly due to past medical irradiation of the breasts with x-rays --- at all ages,
including infancy and childhood. Much of today's radiation dosage is preventable,
without any interference with necessary diagnostic radiology, and hence many future
breast-cancers need not occur. ..."

" In regard to the Feb. 22 front-page article about mammograms:
First, a mammogram does not prevent cancer; it can only find an existing cancer.
"Second, safer methods of diagnosis (without X-rays) are available, including thorough physical examinations, ultrasound, MRI and thermography. The last takes a heat picture showing the physiological function breast tissue. Thermography is available in France, Australia and some centers in the United States. Given that every mammogram, indeed every X-ray procedure, carries an increased risk of causing cancer, development of this safe, non-radiation technique should be a priority. ..." JANETTE D. throughout the U.S. were selling their toxic waste to fertilizer

Dr. Kilburn writes, in part:-
"I presume that the numerous factors that currently slow both individuals' and society's
acceptance of chemicals as major causes of diseases are the same as those that created
opposition so many years ago to the demonstration that fecal contamination of water
caused cholera. I think it imperative to identify 13 such factors. ...
"3. 'It's all in your head.' Sometimes physicians dismiss unfamiliar problems of patients
with this rejoinder, implying that the perceived problem stems from a mind disorder
or a psychiatric problem. Seldom is the broader, literal interpretation made--that "in your
head" means a brain problem. While 'mind' may be a nebulous concept, brain
dysfunction is susceptible to orderly, objective investigation. It is strange that few
psychiatrists, when evaluating chemically exposed patients, consider that the depression,
mania, and other disorders they treat with drugs (chemicals) could be caused by
other chemicals. Instead, the tendency is to prescribe more chemicals (drugs), thus
further poisoning the brains of such patients. "

Much of today's radiation dosage is preventable,
without any interference with necessary diagnostic radiology, and hence many future
breast-cancers need not occur. ..."

or call (520) 320-7953.Folks, Steve helped me considerably. With stage 4 /5 kidney disease, one tends to automatically
have high blood pressure. IF the kidneys are functioning normally, then send out the message
-- a hormone, erythropoietin -- to the heart to control blood pressure. As I'm already chemically
injured, my body suffers adverse events when given drugs, so what to do to control the higher
blood pressure? It's not so bad, until I'm around petrochemically derived fragrances, and then
those neurotoxins have an adverse effect upon my autonomic nervous system and the blood
pressure dramatically spikes--other folks have a precipitous drop; neither is good. Well, one
thing was to learn how to consciously breathe slowly and deeply, and that's where Steve came to
my rescue with a couple of sessions. Secondly, I take Vasotensin Fish Peptides, which are a
natural ace inhibitor -- and no side effects. I also use garlic and a lot of onions. -- barb

EHN thanks Brigham and Women's Hospital for granting permission to post their Frangrance-Controlled Workplace policy.Brigham and Women's Hospital's Fragrance Controlled Workplace
http://ehnca.org/www/ehnhompg/bwhosp.htm
"fragrance controlled" does not do it for several reasons, but admittedly it is a major step
forward in this day and age of industry power plays and no government regulation -- not even
the FDA's required warning message on labels of fragrances released to market without substantiation of safety! The problems are multiple; a few are:- The scent users cannot smell the extent of their own fragrances and therefore
tend to use more throughout the day . . . also, in doing that, they are doing what the
industry recommends. - Modern petrochemical-derived fragrances are concocted to waft further and last
longer on items scented, as well as in the ambient air.
- A fragrance-controlled atmosphere doesn't account for the fact that IF
multiple users -- plus products used in the facility -- volatilize petrochemical-derived
fragrance, there is an accumulative affect. That defies a "fragrance-controlled" policy's
intent for providing a healthier environment for everyone, including all workers, patients
and visitors -- as well as aquatic and wildlife downstream. - Fragrance-controlled policies mock the wisdom of the doctors who "get it" for they are the ones who tell their patients: Avoid fragrances. One can buy and use one's own products that are free of petrochemical-derived fragrances, but we all are subjected to the chemicals used by others. We are secondhand users. We are ignored. Just check the increased rates of "unexplained" asthma for a starter. If we were listened to, I'd hazzard a guess that doctors would start telling their patients to not only avoid fragrances, but strive to get their workplace, school, healthcare facility, etc. to look for safer alternatives. And the doctors would carry that message forward too.
- Fragrance-controlled policies may miss an opportunity to educate doctors, nurses, all
other staff, patients and visitors about the possible long-term and systemic effects of
perfume pollution. Healthcare facilities never miss an opportunity to educate about the
harmful effects of tobacco smoke, well fragrances leave the user to adversely affect the health
of others too, just as does tobacco smoke. But when you get tobacco smoke, you are also getting
other flavors and fragrance industry products: FLAVORS. Again, petrochemically derived
products.Remember according to the US Department of the Interior, if it is
GREEN, it "must not contain petrochemical-derived fragrances." See DOI's

very difficult because initially we may not be sure of all the things that are causing us

The effects of allergies and their treatment go way beyond sneezing and a
stuffy nose, impacting many aspects of sufferers' personal and professional lives.
By Rebecca Voelker
http://www.businessandhealth.com/hostedfiles/features/allergiesatwork/physician/article02.htm - Allergens in the Workplace
Allergens can emerge in settings that appear clean, well maintained and
chemical free...at home and at work.
By Helen Lippman, Contributing Editor
"... The next time you encounter the guy down the hall who always seems to
have a runny nose and red, watery eyes, don't assume it's an intractable cold,
a bout of seasonal hay fever or a stubborn case of the flu. Office workers
may not be exposed to heavy chemicals in spray paints, enzymes in
detergents or the red cedar dust in lumber, but allergists now recognize that
office buildings can harbor a number of allergens or irritants. A sneezing,
sniffling employee could be reacting to copy machine toner, a colleague's
perfume, airborne spores from mold and fungi in the circulation system,
cockroaches or other indoor irritants or allergens. ...
"... The first indication that something's amiss usually comes when employees
report what they believe to be allergicãand job-relatedãsymptoms. But
just getting workers to the point where they're willing to come forward
requires deliberate action. 'Employers need to educate supervisors and other
employees,' Grammer emphasizes. 'They need to be told that if they
develop teary eyes, wheezing, sneezing or other related symptoms, they may
be allergic to something in the workplace and need to tell someone. And tell
them they don't have to worry about being fired,' she adds.
"Keeping workers quiet or dismissing tentative complaints is a highly
ineffective strategy that's likely to deflate employee morale. Delay also
significantly boosts health risks and subsequent costs. ...
"... 'If workers with allergic symptoms are removed from the site or the
offending substance is removed within the first six months to a year,'
Grammer reports, 'they're unlikely to get permanent asthma. If exposure is
much longer than that and they develop abnormal pulmonary function, only one
in four cases of asthma will go away.' ... "

The greatest productivity loss from allergic rhinitis comes not from employees

Is Your Office Killing You?
Sick buildings are seething with molds, monoxide--and worse
"...The culprit: a stew of largely undetected dangers--from the carbon monoxide and other contaminants sucked into a building when air-intake vents overhang exhaust-filled loading docks and parking garages, to the volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) seeping out of building materials, furniture, office equipment, carpet, paint, and pesticides, to the molds and bacteria funneled through muck-filled heating, ventilation, and cooling systems (HVACs). Even the smoke from those puffing away at entrances gets sucked back into the building, chimney-style, because of the suction from revolving doors (what engineers call ''the stack effect''). ..."... All this may signal the day when owner-operators make it a priority to choose
building materials that are safer, companies demand air-quality reports before signing
leases, and employees are as aware of their office's health as their own. Just like stock
options and signing bonuses, workers are certain to start demanding fresh air and
sunlight once they find out that other employees are getting them. Perhaps one day
the office will even have its own annual checkup. If not, many American workers
may not be around to complain. They'll be at home--sick.
-
When you read about VOCs (volatile organic compounds), remember that all synthetically
derived fragrances belong in that category. They are created to be highly volatile, to become
one with the air we all must breathe, and to last longer on the ambient air (thanks to phthalates).

"... Over the past several years, JAN has provided information
regarding fragrance sensitivity and accommodations in the
workplace. There has been a steady increase in cases related to
chemical sensitivity, environmental illness, allergy and respiratory
impairments. JAN Consultants have found that fragrance sensitivity
is the most prevalent issue related to these cases. A JAN case
database search for the term fragrance resulted in a clear increase in cases
since 1992; 37 cases between 1992-1995, and 567 between 1996-2000." [emphasis added]
Translation: It costs money to not control the use of scented products in the workplace.
And for the chemically injured, the costs are beyond calculation! -- barb

Chemical warfare at work
By Howard Baker; NewScientist; 21 June 1997
"... Humans are contributing to the problem in a big way.
"For example, freshly dry-cleaned clothes emit a stream of trichloroethane, the solvent
used by dry-cleaners. On a more personal note, after a good wash and freshen-up our
bodies give off the scent molecules and other chemicals left by shampoos and
soaps, as well as the pleasant smelling chemicals in deodorants and perfumes such as
limonene, terpinene, camphene and alpha-pinene. Some perfumes contain as many as
100 different ingredients providing potent additions to the office soup. On top of
this, we contribute acetone and isoprene which our bodies produce naturally. ..."

Kaiser Permanente California settles disability access lawsuit - April 12, 2001
"Oakland-based hospital chain Kaiser Permanente announced today a collaborative
agreement with Disability Rights Advocates, an Oakland-based non-profit law center, to
improve health care delivery and accessibility for members with disabilities.
"The partnership and mprovements stem from the resolution of a Disability Rights
Advocates lawsuit filed last year against Kaiser Permanente's facilities throughout
California.
"Under the settlement agreement, Kaiser Permanente agreed to make its facility medical
equipment accessible to people with disabilities, by adding scales that a person in a
wheelchair can use, examination tables that lower and similar items. ..."
Ah, HA! so they say. But truth be told, Kaiser still is not truly accessible to the already
chemically and electromagnetically injured. Despite reports in 2004 about a fragrance-free policy,
Kaiser's staff are still wearing scents to the workplace and Kaiser still uses scented cleaning
and maintenance products . . . as well as soap doctors are supposed to use just before
examining patients. DUMB! Not to mention, HARMFUL. There's nothing like having to see
one's doctor and being put in harm's way. Does the fragrance and flavors industry plot health harm as did Philp Morris and its infamous: Czech govt. can save money by killing off people? -- barb

IN DEPTH: HUMAN RESOURCES
What's that smell?
Your perfume or cologne can be hazardous to your co-workers' health
"... So is wearing fragrance a right?
"Melony Massa, president and chief operation officer for Affinity Companies, a San Jose
human-resource consulting firm, says just like dress codes and rules of conduct,
fragrance policies have their place in the corporate rule book.
" 'If somebody doesn't know the appropriate boundaries, as an employer you have
an obligation to step in and correct that behavior just like you would correct any
performance behavior,' she says. ..."
By Michelle Hofmann
I couldn't have said it better myself. Notice that OBLIGATION word. Had my former employer
taken steps to just curtail the use of heavy scents, heavily applied, I believe -- of course, there is
no proof! -- I'd have NOT been forced from gainful employment. Those toxic chemical products
used by some staff could be smelled throughout a block-long building. Some of the users of these
toxic chemical brews, had fragrance-related illnesses themselves and they certainly caused other staff to suffered their various facets of environmental illnesses.Fragrances contain chemicals that are known or suspected carcinogens (capable of causing cancer),
hormone disrupters (phthalates are commonly used in fragrances to make the scent last),
irritants (defined as POISON in my Oxford dictionary), neurotoxins (adversely affects
brain and nervous systems), sensitizers (as far back as 1977, fragrance chemicals were
known to be lung irritants and sensitizers) and teratogens (capable of adversely affecting
embryonic and fetal development). That's a heady brew to unleash upon an unsuspecting public. -- barb
