"... Perfumes are among the most difficult to control since they are perceived by their
users as pleasurable. Personal rights and preferences for perfumed products must be evaluated against the discomfort that scents cause for some people. The odoriferous materials are highly volatile synthetic chemicals; in effect, they contribute to the total VOCs. Scented personal products are not limited to perfumes; they include residual scents on clothing from detergents and fabric softeners, soaps, shampoos, deodorants, skin lotions, and cosmetics. The only successful method of control is to eliminate these odors, either by avoiding their use, as with perfumes, or by using unscented products. ..."

- GM seeds blowin' in the wind
"...Scientists say Manitoba farmers can't expect GM canola to go away easily.
In fact, even spraying the plant with herbicide repeatedly doesn't
guarantee it won't come back. They say the only sure way to rid a field of
GM canola is to pull it out by hand.
"The spread of the seed means farmers in Western Canada can't be sure
their crop is GM-free and that could hurt sales. Entz says many people
blame the seed's creator for the problem. "The genes belong to Monsanto and
the question farmers are asking is are they liable, or is the company liable?"
"Monsanto is urging farmers to call them if they have unwanted
genetically-modified canola growing on their land. The company says it will
come and remove it by hand, till it under, or use a special herbicide to kill it. ...

- USA: Cosmetics Industry Approves Controversial Chemicals
By Cat Lazaroff; Environment News Service; November 20, 2002
"After a comprehensive review of scientific studies, the Cosmetics Ingredients Review (CIR) panel concluded that three related chemicals - dibutyl (DBP), diethyl (DEP) and dimethyl (DMP) phthalate - used to prolong the life of fragrances do not pose harm to cosmetic users. The panel, which is funded and advised by the cosmetics industry, last reviewed the safety of these substances in 1985.
" ' The CIR Expert Panel's decision is based on solid science and not on speculation,' said Dr. Gerald McEwen, vice president for science at the Cosmetic, Toiletry, and Fragrance Association (CTFA). 'The science clearly supports the continued safe use of these ingredients in cosmetics.' ... "

- Occupational Acute Anaphylactic Reaction to Assault by Perfume Spray in the Face
by James E. Lessenger, MD, From a private practice.
Trust me! You can suffer asthma -- at the very least -- as well as severe migraines, dizziness, and an anaphylactic reaction from perfume being sprayed at your doorways, just outside your room; from scented individuals sashaying through your office space -- happened to me and
they had no other reason than to spread their scent; as a result of a hightly scented HR manager determining to "visit" the chemically injured while loaded with her favorite scented product or call in the chemically injured for a myriad of useless meetings; from staff wearing their favorite scented products . . . Talk about a hostile work environment! This behavior should not be tolerated . . . yet it was participated in by management in my former workplace. And in those days, the EEOC saw nothing wrong with it ... MCS was not sufficiently recognized and, from my personal experience, neither was asthma! -- barb

- Fragrances set off alarms!
During the early 90s, fire alarms at Clorox headquarters in Oakland, California were most likely set off by perfumes, colognes and aftershaves. Building engineers were having to track down the reason for false alarms, and upon exiting an elevator, exclaimed about the strong odor of perfumes. Shortly thereafter, it was quite noticable that the use of heavy scents, heavily applied, decreased . . . and so did the false alarms. -- barb

and food flavorings. Some brands of after shave and perfume can give a response in G mode when CAM is held close to the skin, for example as in casualty handling procedures. Some sweets such as peppermints and cough lozenges and menthol cigarettes can cause a response in G mode if the breath is exhaled directly into the CAM inlet.
- "Cleaning compounds. Some cleaning compounds and disinfectants contain additives
which give them a pleasant smell. Some of these additives such as menthol and methyl saticylate (MS) can give false responses in the H mode. Ammonia gives a false response in the G-mode. Cleaning materials are, by nature, spread over large surface areas and, therefore, provide a considerable vapor source, particularly in enclosed spaces. ..."

Absolute Non-scents
By Dave Hitt
Another denigrating, poorly researched article . . . Just look at these gems:
" You're not allowed to have common scents in Halifax, Canada. ..."
"And the worst part of it is that MCS does not exist.
"The human body simply doesn't work that way. Exposure to toxins tends to raise resistance, not lower it. ..."
Obviously he's not looked at NIOSH's Pocket Guide to Hazardous Chemicals and has never seen an MSDS sheet and therefore doesn't understand the term "lowering the
threshold." For the TRUE story about Halifax, visit Another Perspective. -- barb

Is a fragrance free workplace right for you?
January 30, 2003
Many people have had a co-worker at one point that wore so much
cologne or perfume that it was practically unbearable.
The solution may be right around the corner: a fragrance free workplace.
The fragrance free policy is cropping up in public buildings and in the
next few years it may start hitting the private sector.

Just breathe - Talk of scent-free zones increases despite industry critics
Nadine Ricketts the excalibur http://www.umanitoba.ca/toban/archives/march21_2001/features2.html
Rose Haskell jokes, "I've been banished to the kitchen." Well, banishment is no joke! I was banished to a far more toxic workspace and within a year of breathing in diesel exhaust, solvents, cigarette smoke, fragrances and goodness knows what all, my body responded with a fast developing tumor -- fortunately for me, benign. What's more, when I fussed loudly and strongly enough about being in the more toxic office, I was offered an unventilated storage closet, across the hall from a much used -- by highly scented folks -- conference room and right next door to a room with a much used copier, that was vented into the suspended ceiling space. Sadly, and immorally for my money, the powers that be see nothing wrong with that style of harassing management. They finally got what they really wanted . . . me out of there. And that's when I turned my full attention to making EHN's website a source of valuable info in hopes that others can avoid the STUFF that happened to me. See Access at

Called phthalate, it's a type of plastic that has become ubiquitous in modern life. Billions of pounds are now produced annually, according to the Environmental Working Group.
And now, with last month's federal study revealing that phthalates (pronounced "thalates") have gotten under Americans' skin to a degree that surprised federal researchers, research is revving up to find what -- if any -- health risks the chemical poses. ..."

THE ALLERGY ENIGMA\ WORLDWIDE: NUMVBER OF SUFFERERS SOARS -- BUT WHY?
Published on June 22, 1999
" Tim Larew doesn't know he is part of a global medical mystery. The Ellington
third-grader only knows he cannot ignore his allergies.
"Nuts, milk and eggs could kill him. During his eight years, Tim also has had bouts
with eczema, hay fever and asthma. His allergies are so severe that the Larews have
never eaten at a restaurant with their son.
"It is a life-altering condition," said Tim'smother, Kathy Larew, whose 6-year-old son, Nicholas, is also allergic to tree ...
I cannot help but wonder how free his home, clothing, schools, people areound him, et al., are of fragranced products? Fragrances are irritants and sensitizers. Simply put, they can get the body going .. . they can cause and exacerbate adverse health conditions. The studies are being done that affirm the fact that those who are adversely affected by the toxic chemical brews known innocuously as "fragrance" have good reason for adverse health events. We just do not have government oversight, we have government overlook. That works great for the burgeoning industry. It sure has done zip to keep rates of asthma and other upper and lower respiratory disorders, cancers, migraines, ... from soaring. -- barb

Spritzed To The Max
To Chemically Sensitive, It Smells Like Mean Spirits
By PAT SEREMET; Courant Staff Writer; June 1 2003
I thought this article was going to inform the public about the hidden dangers in
perfumed products as it began, and I quote:
You're sitting in a theater, flipping through the Playbill, listening to the orchestra tune up, when suddenly you're engulfed in a floral-scented fog. You hear at the end of the aisle, "Excuse me; excuse me; excuse me," as she and her mushroom cloud of perfume take the seat next to you. The aroma runs over you like a MAC truck. Obsession? No, it's Shalimar. No, no it's Escape. Whatever it is, the woman is drenched in it.
And now you are, too.
But, I was WRONG! How wrong? This wrong:
Can perfume be the new cigarette? Will we be preached to about the dangers of second-hand scent?
Cologne-gate has reached eau such extremes. ...
And . . .
In a world full of odors (many not pretty), is perfume becoming a health concern? Is it possible that heavy perfumage can cause allergies?
Dr. Louis Mendelsohn, an allergist at Hartford Hospital, says no.
"It's not a true allergy; it's not an immunological reaction," he says. "It's an irritant. Some people just can't stand certain smells."
Mendelsohn - himself an Old Spice man - acknowledges that odors bother some people more than others, although he thinks it's mostly "an emotional thing not based on science." But out of respect for others, at Hartford Hospital, he says, the medical staff is requested not to wear strong perfumes.
Dr. Louis Mendelsohn, where is your science that says perfume poisoning is "an emotional thing not based on science." Have you seen the science behind the making of perfumes? Not many outside the industry have. The industry is self-regulated and further protected by trade secret laws. Buy some analyses. Listen to your patients. Do some research. Understand that an irritant can mean more than just an emotional experience associated with the notion that "people just can't stand certain smells."
Of course, in this article we will find examples of people who do experience adverse reactions to fragrances, but one gets the feeling that these folks are few and far between. -- barb
