Barb Wilkie's EHN Website
Last updated 2008

EHN Board President Barb Wilkie was very ill from chemically-induced kidney disease for several years. She passed away May 31, 2011. EHN presents this site both as a tribute and as valuable information. Many links and references will be out of date but Barb's research holds up over time. We will be transferring the site page by page, with updated details, to EHN's main site. If you would like to reach an EHN staff person, please contact us directly.

Y2K

Dear Friends,

I have spent a lot of time this last year in trying to figure out what Y2K problems may be like -- a short term "bump in the road" or a longer period of shortages and disruptions?

The more I've read, both on-line and off, the less optimistic I am. The good news seems too fluffy and insubstantial and the bad news too detailed and plausible. My areas of concern are:

1) long-term oil and energy shortages due to embedded non-compliant chips in oil rigs, and the reputed lack of readiness in oil exporting countries,
2) embedded non-compliant chips in food processing and distribution facilities, both leading to
3) possible food shortages, among other things
4) reported lack of readiness in water and wastewater treatment plants
5) A *New York Times* article, reprinted in the San Francisco Chronicle/Examiner on Dec. 19th, about the preponderence of Y2K errors found in programs and systems of organizations claiming to "Y2K compliant."

I hope you have all made some personal preparation for the possibility of Y2K problems. If not, please stock up on water and food and items you need to stay healthy NOW. Fill your car's gas tank and take other precautions recommended by such organizations as the American Red Cross. Time is getting short, and I like to think of us all staying alive and reasonably healthy if things get bad. These are all things that we should be aware of in case of any natural disaster, as well as manmade ones such as Y2K.
