Barb Wilkie's EHN Website
Last updated 2008

EHN Board President Barb Wilkie was very ill from chemically-induced kidney disease for several years. She passed away May 31, 2011. EHN presents this site both as a tribute and as valuable information. Many links and references will be out of date but Barb's research holds up over time. We will be transferring the site page by page, with updated details, to EHN's main site. If you would like to reach an EHN staff person, please contact us directly.

Additional Safer Housing Information

PLEASE! If the space offered doesn't seem to fit your needs, please, please do not
try to put extra demands on the individual renting or selling. There are some folks
with MCS who will find the home an ideal setting, without added burdens to the
one offering the space. Thanks for your cooperation. Remember, the person offering
the home or space may well be living with MCS, CFIDS, FM, GWS, . . . too.

MCS/EMF Constructed House for Sale Near Snowflake, AZ

[August 28, 2003]

My wife Rita (MCS sufferer) and I own a home nine miles NE of Snowflake, AZ at an elevation of approximately 5,500 ft. (Fellow EI's Susan Molloy and Bruce McCreary are next door neighbors.) We purchased the property in 1998 from a family who custom built it in 1994 to protect against MCS and EMF sensitivities. The wife and two children all had MCS but recovered and they moved to Montana.

From the time we moved to Tucson in 2000, we have rented to a gentleman with MCS who has also made good progress there. Currently, he plans to be moving out at the end of August or early September. In anticipation of that happening, we plan to accept bids on the property in mid-September and are currently working on how that process will be conducted.

There are three buildings on the 40-acre property. There are literally no formaldehyde materials in any of the structures. They all have steel siding and roofing so require no external maintenance or painting. The house is 2,644 sq. feet with four bedrooms and three complete baths. The size and layout of the house would allow comfortable sharing by several individuals, or accommodate a large family. There is absolutely no known history of pesticides on the property.

The detached combination garage, workshop, office, bath and laundry is 1,380 sq. feet and has a separate room that can be used as a bedroom. The original family lived in this structure while the house was being built. The third structure is a small garden shop with atrium and a separate storage room for tiller and garden tools. There is an extensive organic garden area next to this structure.

We have photographs and other information available for serious buyers only. We expect to have the actual bid submission process worked out by late August. A minimum acceptable bid will be approximately $320,000.

The features are too numerous to list entirely, but the more notable ones are summarized below:

  • All construction was with minimal formaldehyde and petroleum products (no plywood, glues, etc.)

  • All electric home and garage facility
