Washington – In the spirit of the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has announced that eight individuals and organizations in New Jersey have been awarded with the Agency’s Environmental Quality Award this year. This award is presented every year to organizations that have demonstrated an outstanding commitment to protecting the environment and recipients are selected from the following categories: individual citizen, environmental education, press and media, business and industry, non-profit organization, environmental or community group, and federal, state, local or tribal agency. …

Mary Lamielle, Voorhees: Mary Lamielle is the founder and president of the National Center for Environmental Health Strategies, a non-profit that protects public health and improves the lives of people affected by chemical and environmental exposures. She initiated the award-winning New Jersey Study of Chemical Sensitivity, and influenced local adoption of a noise ordinance and an integrated pest management resolution for buildings and parks.

In 1979, Lamielle, who has lived along Rural Avenue her whole life, became disabled with environmental sensitivities, a condition in which health is impacted after exposure to foods, chemicals, pesticides, molds, electromagnetic fields and radio frequencies from wireless technologies, according to the Environmental Health Association of British Columbia.

After years of searching, Mary Lamielle figured out what was making her so miserably, dramatically sick. It was the world.

Lamielle, who lives in Voorhees, is chemically sensitive, a condition that is not recognized by the medical Establishment or the insurance industry but that sufferers say can be debilitating.

She founded and leads the National Center for Environmental Health Strategies, a 2,000-member organization working to win recognition and help for victims. For herself, she struggles with an isolation forced by the nausea, vertigo and breathing difficulties she said will occur if she subjects herself to perfume, gasoline vapors, even her new car.

Last year, Mary Lamielle, of Voorhees, N.J., traveled to Washington for a business meeting. Her room at the Grand Hyatt “was perfect,” she recalled. But when she ventured into the conference area, she experienced vertigo and breathing problems, which she believed were caused by chlorinated water in the hotel’s decorative pools.

I’ve been ill and out of touch and just saw this (Feb. 8,, 2024). Mary Lamielle was my trusted guiding light throughout my engagement with MCS, whether on my Radio program on Pacifica, and during and after my 22 years as Indoor Air Program Coordinator at USEPA Region 9, and of course for my own illness.

I had the good fortune to help financially support her work in a meaningful manner for many years. She was one of the bravest people I’ve ever known, a wonderful friend, and a moral giant. I’ll never forget our marathon phone conversations over the years, and will miss them, as we all miss her.
