Rev. Nano Nathan is in the process of acquiring a large (630 acre) parcel of land. He's planning maybe 13-16 building sites, a minimum of 36 acres each, with protective restrictions, covenants, and dedicated open spaces. It will probably be a "gated" community. This site now has a paved road to it, but is 15 miles east of the nearest town which is Snowflake, AZ. To find it on a map, look south of Holbrook, then east along Concho Highway 8 miles, then north on Hay Hollow Road. The property begins at that intersection then goes North almost a mile, then East and West a half-mile or so each way. There are 3 wells currently, and electricity runs to the property, however more wells or water delivery systems and distillers would need developing. (Forget lawns - let's grow food.) Wiring to homes would of course be undergrounded and twisted [1] to minimize electromagnetic fields. Several or all houses can be off the grid and use solar panels if the residents choose. There are three good solar equipment and installation companies in Snowflake. Each site is likely to be something like $40,000 - $45,000 (not firm yet - also, if someone were interested in investing in the project itself, I'll bet they would get a smokin' deal on their site). I have lived in this area (but a little closer to town) since 1992, so have my bearings about some aspects of finding our way(s) here, and am glad to help answer questions. There are currently ten MCS/ES households here nearby. We drink a lot of water, and we stay out of the mid-day sun. Many of us either are, or have gone through, periods of light and sun sensitivity, but the air here has still made it worth being here. There is an organic farm (vegetables) near my house, and a fledgling but wonderful natural food store in Snowflake. The nearest truly huge natural food store is in Flagstaff, 2 1/2 hours drive away, but many, many local organic sources are available. Many hippies (honest!) moved here straight out of the Haight or someplace about 25 years ago, and they are here, thriving - they are invaluable as our friends and support people. There are a couple potential building sites right near my house as well, but they are unlikely to ever have the protective neighborhood restrictions that will be enforced at the new property. We're at 6,000 feet altitude. Our weather includes snow several times per winter, which "sticks" a day or a few days per time, windy springs, and monsoon in the late summer with rains. Rev. Nano is here doing planning, calls, and meetings today and Saturday so if you want to speak with him, call (928) 536-4625 (my phone number). His cell phone, which is not used here, he does use in the Bay Area: (928) 380-3571. He's figuring groundbreaking could begin in Spring 2002. You can e-mail back to me as well and I'll forward messages, or phone. That's the Dirt. sm
A good way to learn about how to twist pairs and do household and neighborhood wiring better is John Banta's 1-hour VCR tape called Current Switch.
Current Switch is available from many sources for about $29.95 - one example is:
