Wine and Cheese and Water Wars with a Distinguished Hellraiser

An evening with
Dr. Marty Griffin

6 PM, Sunday, September 24
Dance Palace in Point Reyes Station

By Catherine Caufield, Executive Director
Environmental Action Committee of West Marin

West Marin has a big stake in understanding the explosive growth schemes of nearby Santa Rosa and its eager accomplice, the Sonoma County Water Agency. This City/Water Agency partnership is a growth machine that acts ruthlessly to force its vision of sprawl on the regions in its power, including West Marin. Like the Metropolitan Water District, the infamous water agency memorialized in the film "Chinatown," SCWA has rights over a vast area, from which it sucks water to feed the growth and development of its central city, Santa Rosa. It too favors strong arm "Chinatown" tactics. And, worst of all, it threatens to turn Marin, Sonoma, and southern Mendocino counties into a replica of the sprawling Los Angeles basin.

Marty Griffin, distinguished environmental activist and author of Saving the Marin- Sonoma Coast, will be at the Dance Palace in Point Reyes Station at 6 PM on Sunday, September 24, to give a talk and slide show about the water battles West Marin has fought--and those it is still fighting--with the SCWA.

Come drink Hop Kiln Red and feast on local cheeses and Bovine Bakery bread, and learn more about the Evil Empire that threatens West Marin. Hear how the SCWA fought the Point Reyes Seashore, how it schemed to provide water to a city of 150,000 on the shores of Tomales Bay, and what it now has in store for West Marin with the Marin-Sonoma pipeline.

Marty Griffin has been involved in the water wars since 1957, during the first fight against a Marin-Sonoma pipeline. He was co-founder of Audubon Canyon Ranch, served on the Marin Municipal Water Board and on the Eel River Water Council. He created Friends of the Russian River and serves on the Board of Friends of the Eel River, which is now battling the SCWA in court.

There is no admission charge. The evening begins at 6 PM with a wine and cheese reception. The talk is at 7 PM. Dr. Griffin will be available afterwards to sign copies of his book, Saving the Marin Sonoma Coast. Dr. Griffin is kindly donating a portion of proceeds from the sales of his book to EAC. For more information, call the EAC office at 415.663.9312.
