Noon and 7:30 p.m.
World-renowned cancer expert, Samuel S. Epstein, M.D. will speak on Monday, October 23 at noon in the Yosemite Room at the National Sierra Club Headquarters, 85 Second Street, San Francisco. And on the same date at 7:30 pm in the San Francisco Bay Chapter's Conservation Office, 2530 San Pablo Ave, Berkeley. He will be presenting material from his book, "The Politics of Cancer Revisited," published by East Ridge Press in 1998 which will be sold at both events. One focus is why the rate of cancer is increasing. He points to the lack of regulatory controls over industrial chemicals and discusses the politics (read money) behind this lack. Another focus is the failure of the American Cancer Society and the National Cancer Institute to educate the public on how to prevent cancer. For example, women are encouraged to get mammograms for early diagnosis of breast cancer without being educated on how to reduce their risks; for instance by avoiding diets containing fats that may be heavily contaminated with chlorinated pesticides that are estrogenic and carcinogenic to the breast. Dr. Epstein is Professor of Occupational and Environmental Medicine at the School of Public Health, University of Illinois Medical Center at Chicago. He is an international recognized authority on the toxic and carcinogenic effects of environmental pollutants in air, water, and the workplace, and of ingredients and contaminants in consumer products. Call 510-658-8083 to make a reservation for either event.
