Synthetic chemicals now pervade everyday activities so that it can be
difficult to see how profoundly they have changed life on Earth...and changed
Earth itself. Despite their known deleterious effects on human health, and
their damaging impact on wildlife, new synthetics are entering the market at
an average of three per day. According to the Worldwatch Institute, there are
today between 50,000 and 100,000 chemicals in commercial production.
American PIE is sharing information on a potentially revealing and useful
report regarding practices within the chemical industry. This information
comes from a working coalition that's launching 'Coming Clean,' a project of
the Environmental Health Fund, the Environmental Working Group, the Center
for Health, Environment and Justice, and Women's Voices For the Earth. The
project is aimed at cleaning up the chemical industry's contamination of our
food, our bodies and our environment.
On Monday night, March 26, PBS will air a groundbreaking investigative report
on the chemical industry: "Trade Secrets: A Bill Moyers Report" (watch your
local outlet for air time, or go to the PBS.org website http://www.pbs.org/tradesecrets/). According to PBS,
"Trade Secrets" will address how health and safety have been put at risk by
the chemical industry and why powerful forces don't want the truth to be
known. Moyers and producer Sherry Jones spotlight the chemical industry's
acts of corporate irresponsibility that have left communities with polluted
environments and workers with severe health problems. The investigative
report, accompanied by information at the PBS.org web site, is based on a
massive archive of industry documents. "Trade Secrets" will help provide
education on toxic chemicals for the general public as well as for those
working directly on environmental health issues.
The 'Coming Clean' project is working with groups across the country to
organize "Trade Secrets" viewing events. For more information about how you
can organize a viewing event in your community, visit the ComeClean.org
website or contact AnnLong at annlong@shentel.net, Charlotte Brody at cbrody@chej.org, Bryony Schwan at swan@wildrockies.org, or Monica Rohde
at mrohde@chej.org.
The chemical revolution of the past 50 years has produced thousands of
man-made chemicals that have not been tested for their effect on the public's
health and safety. It's time for the chemical industry to come clean!
