Teleconference: Understanding & Accommodating Multiple Chemical Sensitivity FEBRUARY 20, 2002
Join us to:
IL NET presents - Multiple chemical sensitivity may affect as much as 33% of the population but still remains a misunderstood and often overlooked disability. Although MCS is covered by the Americans with Disabilities Act, people with this disability are denied access every day because of the common use of chemicals in our everyday world. Symptoms can range from relatively mild to life-threatening and require various degrees of lifestyle and environmental changes. This presents some unusual challenges for independent living organizations in trying to be totally inclusive and accessible. This teleconference will give you the facts to understand this disability and how to accommodate it. TRAINING MATERIALS Training materials will be provided to each site shortly after the registration cut-off date of January 16, 2002. A hard copy as well as a disk copy of the materials will be provided to assist site coordinators with providing alternate formats for their site participants. NCIL must receive your registration form and fee prior to mailing the training material. WHAT EQUIPMENT WILL I NEED? All you will need is a conference room and a high quality speakerphone. ALTERNATE FORMATS Site coordinators are responsible for ensuring the accessibility of their sites. To obtain alternate formats at no charge please contact Braille Works via e-mail at brailleworks@brailleworks.com or via FAX at 813-689-8628. Alternate formats must be ordered 7 days in advance to avoid shipping charges. HOW DO I CONNECT WITH THE TELECONFERENCE? In the confirmation letter that you receive with your training material, you will be given the access code. You will then need to call the NCIL office to get your site specific PIN number. On the day of the teleconference, you will need to call at least 10-15 minutes prior to the start of the call. When you call you will key in the access code and your pin number. We will begin the live teleconference promptly as scheduled at 3:00 pm Eastern, 2:00 pm Central, 1:00 pm Mountain, and 12:00 noon Pacific. YOUR TRAINERS Pamela Gibson, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Psychology at James Madison University has been researching the life impacts of multiple chemical sensitivity since 1992. Her research has resulted in several journal articles, numerous conference presentations and the self-help book MULTIPLE CHEMICAL SENSITIVITY: A SURVIVAL GUIDE (New Harbinger Publications, 2000). Mary Lamielle is Executive Director of the National Center for Environmental Health Strategies, Inc. where she provides clearing-house services, technical assistance, policy development, research, and advocacy for those injured by chemical and environmental exposures. She is frequently sought after as an MCS expert by television/radio, newspapers, professional journals, as well as Congress. EXPANDING THE POWER OF THE IL MOVEMENT This seminar is brought to you by IL NET, a project spearheaded by the Independent Living Research Utilization (ILRU) Program in partnership with the National Council on Independent Living (NCIL). Why should one refrain from wearing scented products to meetings? Because synthetic scents contribute to air pollution and are harmful to people living with respiratory disabilities, migraines and other headaches, and chemical injury.
