Files Petition With the FDA
May 23, 1999
Dockets Management Branch RE: Docket # 99P-1340 To whom it may concern: I am in favor of the Petition to have Eternity eau de parfum declared misbranded. The perfume, along with countless others, needs to be regulated by the FDA. It is extremely important that this issue not be taken lightly, as thousands and thousands of people are becoming very ill when exposed to these deadly toxins. Unlike cigarette smoke, which contains dangerous chemicals, people do not have choices to avoid exposure to perfumes. We suffer from it in public places, airplanes, restaurants, and the list goes on. Particularly disconcerting, is the fact that we cannot even avoid it in the medical buildings or hospitals. Perfume has ruined my own life. Unless I live like a recluse, and forewarn all of my visitors to not wear perfume, I'm in for a 24-48 hour long migraine headache; heart beat irregularities and nausea, and chronic fatigue. Perfumes need honest labeling. They need danger warnings. But more importantly, they need to be investigated and regulated. I've noticed, since the early '80s that perfumes do not have any sense of individuality, as far a smell goes. That is because they are now made of so many poisonous chemicals that they all smell like stench. I know of many people who gag at the smell. It is a slow poisoning. At first it just bothers you, then before you know it, you can become gravely ill. It has ruined the lives of many and probably has killed people, for whom it induces asthma, and the deaths probably are not confirmed as perfume- or cologne-induced deaths. I'm hoping that someday soon, we will see FDA regulations for all perfumes. It's simply an act of incredible crime for this to be allowed to continue. Thank you for reading, Connie M. Pitts
